Development is a complex topic. The social, environmental, and cultural impacts of projects are heavily scrutinized. Stakeholder groups often do not see eye to eye on the path forward. Projects in a developing world context face a particular set of challenges including pressing social needs, weak institutions, and a lack of capacity by the local population to understand the true implications of an investment project.

This is particularly the case with indigenous peoples and other proud groups who have seen themselves marginalized from economic development opportunities in the past. Projects which fail to create true social value and engage local communities in a culturally appropriate manner are likely to face opposition and often will not succeed.
